About Paul Morris and his skills:
that enable him to provide computing support for businesses of all sizes, particularly SMEs.
Background to Paul Morris:
Paul has over 25 years of experience in the IT industry at all levels from programmer to IT manager to freelance consultant.
A website developed by PaulHis most recent positions being an eCommerce Advisor and ICT Advisor working on government funded projects, namely Opportunity Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government ICT Advisory Service. Note that both of these projects are now closed.
Paul started his career in IT as a programmer and has worked for a number of companies as he climbed the career ladder. His specialisation was in databases and relating business issues to IT systems. He has always sought to exploit technology to the advantage of the business, yet provide facilities that non-technical people could use. One high point was in 1986 with the systems he provided for the sales force including: email, an early 'browser' and remote access to the central order processing systems - all this before laptops and the Internet.
In his later career Paul worked for a large multi-national running their IT department in London. This was rated by the company's international IT auditors as the best world-wide.
Getting disillusioned with large company politics, Paul became a freelance consultant working on both long-term and short-term projects (you have to be good to get in, understand the issue, resolve it, and hand it over in 2 days! You also have to be good to stay with a company for 3 years, working from home for the majority of that time.)
After Paul relocated to a smallholding in rural Wales, he joined the Opportunity Wales project as an eCommerce Advisor. Here he quickly established a reputation as being one of the better advisors - in fact, after only 4 months he was appointed the Quality Advisor with the responsibility of checking the reports produced by the other advisors in the local group. Whilst working for Opportunity Wales Paul gained two important qualifications:
- Professional Development Award in e-Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing
- Opportunity Wales eCommerce Award (30 credits at level 1) from Cardiff University
- as well as gaining 'TMB' professional accreditation.
PHP and MySQL
Paul is currently enhancing his skills using PHP and MySQL. You may notice that this site uses PHP in a minor way, but Paul is embarking on a significant private project that will utilise the tools to the full. Phase one of this project has just been launched: this website advertises smallholdings and other properties with land.
iSeries systems and programming:
This is where Paul gained most of his technical and business experience. Paul worked on the iSeries and its predecessors the AS/400 and System/38 designing, programming and implementing application systems covering Accounts, Sales, Service Management, and Manufacturing.
Key to much of this was understanding the nature of databases and SQL and how they relate to the business processes. These skills are still valid with the iSeries database being very advanced and, even now, MySQL (which Paul is utilising) is just approaching what he was using on the AS/400 several years ago (Triggers and referential integrity to name but two!)
Paul's skills were demonstrated by the fact that he has been a regular contributor to iSeries News Magazine - both the US/International edition and the UK edition. More details are given on the computing articles page.
