Some FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) regarding this business providing advice and support:

run by Paul L.G. Morris: an experienced, respected and qualified Computer Advisor.

Why don't you fix PCs and other equipment?

Although Paul is capable of maintaining his own PC, he has decided to play to his strengths and not be a 'Jack of All Trades' that tries to do everything. Paul has decided not to offer services that involve:

1) Repairing PCs (either hardware or software)
2) All other forms of hardware maintenance
3) Maintaining or administrating networks
4) Selling goods or services provided by others.

This enables Paul to concentrate on helping you use computers in your business.

Do you design websites?

The truthful answer is a qualified 'Yes'. Paul does not claim to be a complete website designer (there are limits to his capabilities!) but, after seeing and working with other developers (whilst working for Opportunity Wales), he believes his skills are better than that of many who claim to develop websites.

For example, one of Paul's clients told him that he was getting a website developed by a third party. It transpired that this 'web developer' was a client of a colleague who had just built his first website for his own business. This colleague reported that his client was frequently on the phone asking for help in developing his website. Do you want such a person developing your Business website?

Paul has seen the issues that some clients have faced with some of these developers and he believes that he can put together a reasonable package that consists of not just a website, but one that accommodates issues such as:

1) Visibility in search engines such as Google.
2) Accessibility for those with vision impairments.
3) Handing over the completed website including passwords.
4) Ensuring the website is registered to you.

If you do not want Paul to develop your website, talk to him first to ensure that your chosen developer has the skills and experience to do a good job for you.

Can you program database driven websites?

The short answer is Yes. This webpage is driven by a database. Each question and answer is held in the database. The program that drives this page gets the data, organises it on the page and constructs the menu. Adding another question is simply a matter of filling in data on a form. In a similar manner, the 'Notes for Small Businesses' page is database driven, but with each topic showing on a separate page.

You can see then that Paul has developed reasonable skills in PHP, one of the major programming languages supporting many websites. You may have heard of HTML which gives static, unchanging websites; but for dynamic, changing websites you need a programming language such as PHP connected to a database such as MySQL - a major database underpinning many dynamic websites.

Can you design databases?

Yes. Paul has spent over 25 years designing databases, developing the systems around them, and struggling with the ineffectual designs of others. So he knows about data, databases and their relationship with business processes.

Why did you leave Opportunity Wales?

Opportunity Wales was an Objective 1 project that was phased out in the first half 2007. The W.A.G. ICT Advisory Service had the plug pulled by W.A.G. so that finished in March 2007. There were no follow-on projects defined by the W.A.G. when these finished.

Therefore, Paul decided to capitalise on his skills and experience by working for clients directly. Unfortunately, as there is no subsidy from Government funds, Paul has to charge a commercial rate for his work.
